Advanced XC – South Africa
January 14, 2027 – January 25, 2027
Who runs it?

Is it for you?
Are you already a competent XC pilot wanting to improve your skills? Do you want to spend the end of January in the South African sunshine? Do you want to chase kilometres in South Africa’s prime XC destination?
requirements
This trip is only open to experienced XC pilots. You will have a minimum of 200 hours (preferably more) along with current SIV experience. You will have already flown 50km, preferably with us or in a competition environment.
About the trip
Some pilots asked us: “What do I need to do next to improve my flying?” So we created this trip.
Here we take off the training wheels and encourage pilots to fly further, faster and make their own decisions. You’ll be involved in analysing the weather and setting the tasks. We’ll be chasing 100km tasks whenever the conditions allow and setting challenging tasks out into the flats.
We have a small group of pilots so we can work as a team and help everyone meet their individual goals.
Porterville
We’ve explored all over the world for the perfect winter destination and we’ve found nowhere as reliable as South Africa.
Porterville is South Africa’s XC hub. The hot, dry climate gives us reliable XC conditions most days. Conditions in January are often strong giving great potential for suitably experienced pilots.
Trip schedule
Jan 14 – we’ll pick you up at Cape Town airport in the morning and probably stop for lunch on the way to Porterville.
Jan 15-24 – XC flying in Porterville.
Jan 25 – Return to Cape Town airport. We recommend you take an evening flight home so we can fly on the 25th or stop for some lunch and activities in the winelands on the way.
Flights
There are direct flights to Cape Town from Heathrow and Gatwick with British Airways, Norse Atlantic and Virgin. There are also great value flights with Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa and other airlines with a change along the way.
It’s also worth considering adding some extra days onto your trip to experience some of South Africa’s many tourist attractions.
Accommodation
We’ll be staying at a dedicated flyers lodge complete with air con and en-suite bathrooms.
Rooms are usually shared with one other pilot.
Breakfast is included.
